It is great to go through a list like this and see some consoles on it that I forgot existed. Remember the Atari Jaguar and the Panasonic 3DO back in 1993? I couldn’t wait to see where the PS2 stood on their list. Of course I expected it to be high on it. It ended up being in the top five, and was behind only two other consoles.

Here are their top 5:
5.) SEGA Genesis
4.) Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
3.) PLAYSTATION 2
2.) Atari 2600
1.) Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

If you are wondering where the current generation, PlayStation 3, sits on the list, it is at # 15. GET YOUR PS3 HERE

My guess was that if anything would be ahead of the PS2, it would be the Nintendo. While I agree with the reasons the Atari 2600 and the NES were put in the top 2 spots, I feel the PS2 should have at least been up at #2.

The Atari 2600 started it all back in 1977. The videogame trend began to really pick up in 1979 as did this system. Not long after that the video game industry crashed and was down and out. Then the Nintendo came, and brought the industry back to life. These reasons make perfect sense. It all depends on your rating system. The Nintendo brought video games to the masses during the worst, most important time for the industry. That is significant. But today gaming has changed completely. Video game consoles are expected to do a lot more than just let you play a game. The PS2 brought the DVD format into people’s homes which eventually helped kill the VHS format. This helped to broaden the audiences that were buying the system. Adults were buying PS2s not just for games, but to watch movies on. It was backwards compatible with PS1 games and they later added online capabilities as well. It was more than just a box that played games; it was an entertainment unit the whole family was using.

GET YOUR PS3 HERE

PS2 Games & Dreamcast on PlayStation Network?

When the PS2 came out over 9 years ago I was pleased to hear I would be able to play all of my old PlayStation 1 games on the new machine. It was the same deal when the PS3 released with backward capabilities, both PS1 and PS2 games. But when the reviews came out on the new PS3 Slim console, one of the few negatives it received was that it would play PS1 and PS3 games but NOT PS2 games. If you haven’t broke down and got a PS3 yet, it won’t be easy to find versions of the system from here on out that will play your PS2 games as Sony has taken them out of production. (You can get an 80GB Model here.)

Recently rumors began swirling after a French site spotted a document containing information purportedly coming from Sega of America’s press site. The document states a meeting took place August 5. Some of the information on the site (announcement of the PS3 slim for example) has come to pass. When the meeting shifted to discussing software it was revealed that Sony intends to sell all PlayStation 2 titles through the PlayStation Network. There was also discussion on bringing Dreamcast games to the PlayStation Network. Hopefully these rumors end up being true.

If they are true this move would make sense of Sony stripping the new PS3 Slims of its PS2 game capabilities. They would obviously want gamers to buy their favorite PS2 games over their network. If it is important that you own a PS3 system you can play your PS2 games on you can get one here and you’ll be able to play your disc-based PS2 games. And if the rumors are true this could all be huge for Sony’s PlayStation Network. The company recently announced a partnership with Netflix allowing consumers to stream movies and television shows through the PS3. Check back here for more details when they come.

Get Your 80GB PlayStation 3 Here

Recent PS2 Releases

A lot of people may not realize it, but there are some notable games coming out on the PS2 in the near future. It is approaching its tenth birthday, and with 19,000+ games, it still has some life left. However, with the release of 7th generation consoles, including the Playstation 3, is it worth getting one now? Well, the answer is…sort of. The PS2 version is cheaper, but I know places online that give you an opportunity to get your hands on a FREE PlayStation 3. It’s worth looking into if you’re strapped for cash. But while next generation consoles have superb graphics, that doesn’t mean these PS2 games can’t be just as fun. Here is (in my opinion) the top PS2 games you must play:

• Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
• Resident Evil 4
• Gran Turismo 4
• Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance
• Kingdom Hearts (if you are into RPG’s)
• God of War 2

What other PS2 games do you consider must-haves? You let me know and I promise to thank you with plenty of PlayStation news, like recent and upcoming releases for the PlayStation 2.
